Test Your Risk for Diabetes
Key takeaway: More than a third of American adults have prediabetes — and 90% of them don't know it.1 Could you or a family member be one of them? To see if you're at risk, take the one-minute quiz sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).2
Why it matters: Prediabetes is a serious condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Major risk factors for prediabetes include:
- Being overweight
- Being age 45 or older
- Having a parent, brother or sister with type 2 diabetes
- Being physically active fewer than three times a week
- Having gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or giving birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
The good news: Support is available to help you take control of your health. If you have any of the risk factors for prediabetes, consider enrollment in a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). These virtual programs are offered at no cost by UC campuses and Omada (available through your Health Net plan).
Research shows that program participants who lost 5%–7% of their body weight and added 150 minutes of exercise per week cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 58% (71% for people over 60 years old).3,4
